Tatau Residency 2011

As the official photographer for the Tatau residency, I had the privilege of documenting the rarely seen process of traditional Samoan tattooing as part of the Pacific Heritage Art Residency series. The programme aimed to encourage the preservation of traditional Pacific knowledge through the Centre for Pacific Studies at The University of Auckland.

Over the month-long residency I documented Tufuga ta tatau (tattoo master) Su’a Suluape Alaiva’s Petelo Suluape, creating a full-male tatau on University of Auckland PhD candidate Falaniko Tominiko and his brother the late Peter Tominiko. It was an honour to be present and photograph such a significant moment for the Tominiko/Godinet family.
